Design Characteristics

This aesthetic was made popular by the East Beijing style in the early 1900s but was nearly eradicated with the Cultural Revolution ban.  Since then, this aesthetic mostly remains in the Hubei countryside east of the capital city.  It is characterized by it’s straight, sloping profile and strong lines.  These puppets were often made out of donkey and cowhide and are anywhere between 12-20” tall, depending on the troupe and when the puppets were created.
