There's no better way to get a feel for the leather carving craft other than seeing it for yourself. Take a look at these three short videos to get a sense for how different the carving styles are around the country. 

 

 

 

 

Huaxian County, Shaanxi Province



This method is the push-knife carving method (the leather is pushed onto the blade) and the most difficult leather carving method to master in the country. Don't be fooled by how easy this carver makes it look!

Huanxian Country, Gansu Province



This short clip shows the pull-knife leather carving method (knife is pulled through the leather, much like an exacto knife on paper). Notice that this carver is using very thin layers of leather and can therefor cut a few sheets at the same time.

Tangshan Country, Hebei Province

​

In this short video, the Northeaster style of leather cutting is featured, using a 'sawing' knife method and a beeswax cutting board for the knife's blade to enter and exit with ease. Leather carver: Tianxiang Lu.
